Michigan's extraordinary diversity of landscape — bordered by four of the five Great Lakes, with the forested Upper Peninsula to the north and the fertile Lower Peninsula to the south — is best experienced through its remarkable collection of historic inns and bed-and-breakfasts. This travelogue is as much a travel guide as a presentation.

The journey samples inns throughout the state, from elegant Victorian-era establishments in lake resort towns to rustic lodges in the Upper Peninsula wilderness. Each inn becomes a lens through which to explore its surrounding landscape and community — the vineyards of the Leelanau Peninsula, the dunes of Sleeping Bear, the fishing villages of the Straits of Mackinac.

Mackinac Island — reachable only by ferry or small plane, with no motorized vehicles on the island — provides one of the presentation's centerpieces, alongside Detroit's extraordinary cultural resurgence. Michigan rewards the unhurried traveler, and this travelogue shows exactly why.
