Cruising Through Europe: Hungary to the Netherlands

← All Travelogues

One of travel's great pleasures is a river cruise through the heart of Europe, and this travelogue follows the Danube and Rhine through some of the continent's most storied cities. Beginning in Budapest, the journey moves upriver through the landscapes and cultures that produced some of Western civilization's greatest music, architecture, and art.

The Danube carries the cruise through the medieval charm of Regensburg and into Vienna — a city saturated with musical genius. Mozart composed here, Beethoven struggled here, the Strauss family made the city dance. The travelogue captures Vienna's imperial grandeur and its intimate musical world before moving west through Passau, where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers meet, and onto the Rhine.

The Rhine cruise brings the journey to Germany and ultimately to the Netherlands, where windmills, canals, and the Golden Age of Dutch painting provide a magnificent conclusion. This is European civilization experienced at its most gracious — from a deck chair, with a glass of wine in hand.
